We Checked Our Own Homework. Three Times.
We checked our privacy promises against our software for Quebec, Europe and Canada, and worked through 68 gaps. Here's what it means for your business.
Every phone company says it takes your privacy seriously. This week we spent three days proving it: we went through our own software for Quebec, Europe and the rest of Canada, found 68 things we could do better, and worked through every one. Here's what that means for your business.
Let's be honest about privacy pages. Most companies write one, publish it, and never look at it again. Meanwhile the product keeps changing, and a year later the page describes a service that doesn't quite exist anymore.
We didn't want to be that company. So we sat our privacy promises next to our actual software and asked one question, line by line: is this still true? Where it wasn't, we changed the software or we changed the page. Usually the software.
Three regions audited. Sixty-eight gaps found and worked through. About 1,300 pieces of on-screen text now in French.
Plot twist: we don't record your calls. We never did.
Here's our favourite finding, because it's good news. A few of our older documents talked about where we store call recordings. When we went looking for the recordings, there weren't any. District AI has never kept the audio of a single call.
What a call leaves behind is simple: a record of who called and when, a written transcript, and a short summary so you know what happened without listening back to anything. And now you can decide how long even those stick around, with a setting that clears transcripts and summaries automatically after a period you choose.
We fixed every document that said otherwise, and we built checks that stop that sentence from ever sneaking back in.
Quebec: bonjour, your whole account is in French
Our website has spoken French since early September. Now everything behind the sign-in does too, if you want it to.
- Your dashboard, in French. Flip the switch once and it follows you to every device.
- Your invoices, receipts and emails, in French. No more English paperwork for a French-speaking business.
- A French-speaking receptionist, ready on day one. Answer your callers in the language they called in.
- Law 25 paperwork, done. The incident register and privacy impact assessment our Law 25 page mentions are real documents, and our deletion promises run automatically.
Europe: your data stays in Frankfurt
If you're in Europe, you should be served from Europe. Now you are, from the moment you check out.
- Sign up in Berlin, Paris or Dublin and your workspace is set up in Frankfurt. Your contacts, call history and transcripts live in our European region.
- Your callers always know they're talking to an AI, in the language your receptionist speaks: English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch or Italian. That's what European rules expect, and it's simply good manners.
- A plain-language GDPR page that tells you exactly where your data goes and how long we keep it.
- Take your data with you any time. The export now includes your knowledge documents, your receptionist setup and your workflows.
Canada: we won't wake up your customers
Nobody wants a call at 6 a.m., least of all from a business they like. So:
- Calling hours follow your customer's clock, not yours. A Toronto business will never ring Vancouver before breakfast again.
- Automated calls carry your business's name, not ours. Your customers hear from you.
- We play it safe with Canada's calling rules. Automated outbound calls to Canadian numbers are paused until we can record the consent the CRTC requires. Your reputation is worth more than a shortcut.
- ARRÊT and AIDE work by text, just like STOP and HELP, with replies in French.
And one more thing: no marketing email. Ever.
While we were reading consent rules in three jurisdictions, we asked ourselves a simple question: do our customers actually want a newsletter? We'd built one and never sent it. So we switched it off for good.
You'll hear from us about your account, your calls and your bills. That's it. If that ever changes, we'll ask first.
Why this matters when you're choosing a phone provider
You can't see inside a phone company. You can't check where a call is answered, where a transcript is stored, or what gets said to a caller on your behalf. You have to trust the company's word.
We think that word should be worth something, so we check it, fix what doesn't hold up, and tell you about it. Including the parts we haven't finished: our data residency page lists exactly what still runs outside your region, and why.
Want an AI receptionist you can actually check up on? District AI answers your calls in English or French, in your region, with the receipts to prove it. See plans and pricing or talk to us.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to do anything?
Nope. Everything in this post is already live. If you'd like your account in French, pick it in your profile settings.
Was this an outside audit?
No, we did it ourselves, against our own software and documents. It's not a certification. It's us making sure what we tell you is true.
So you really don't record calls?
Really. You get a call record, a transcript and a short AI summary. No audio is kept.
